HOSTEL IN SINTRA
Client - Carlos Ferreira Arquitetos
Location - Sintra, Portugal
Year - 2023
This magnificent building, over 100 years old, once a manor house with all its centuries-old features, came to us as an exciting challenge.
The main objective was to transform a building designed to be a residential home into a welcoming hostel, balancing the preservation of history with functional modernity.
When faced with the challenge of creating an open environment for communal living, but at the same time maintaining the privacy of the rooms, we sought to harmonize the historic atmosphere with contemporary elements.
The combination of preserving the original architectural details and introducing an innovative design for the shared spaces became the crucial point in encouraging interaction between guests.

In the interiors, we focused on versatility and space optimization, providing ample living areas without compromising the comfort of the private areas.
The choice of sustainable materials was considered, in line with the idea of promoting environmental awareness.
Outside, considering that the back side of this building was made up of chicken coops, the transformation of the garden was a landscaping challenge. Integrating a swimming pool to create a relaxing atmosphere, walking areas and a fragrant garden, the interaction between the internal and external space has been carefully designed, allowing guests to enjoy the serenity of the Sintra surroundings.
This project sought to balance tradition with modernity, creating a welcoming and functional hostel that respects the history of the building and offers a unique experience to its visitors.
